2009 MUSIC CAMP RECAP

The first St. Andrew Music Camp held July 13-19th in Aptos, CA went beyond everyone's highest expectations. Thirty-eight students in grades 1-6 spent 3 hours a day for five days learning rhythms, playing bells, feeling the beat, singing and moving in more ways than you can imagine. They left the campus enthused and anxious to return. Parents remarked on the number of camp songs being repeated at home each day.

Those attending church on Sunday, July 19 were amazed and delighted with the wall-to-wall attendance. Parents, siblings, grandparents and friends of the participating Music Campers made it look like Christmas Eve at St. Andrew and filled the air with childish glee. Campers provided a bell piece written by Eileen Mihm for the Introit and sang an African folk song, Obwisana, as special music.

Campers and their familes joined St. Andrew members in an after-service potluck. Congratulations to the potluck team. Food was in abundance for everyone and gave the spirited children energy for the full 25 minute concert which followed.

During the concert first graders sang She'll Be Comin Round the Mountain accompanied by Don Adkins on ukulele, Melody Pouls on fiddle and Natasha Nogueira on bass. They "killed the old red rooster" and ate "tofu and dumplings" when the rooster got away. Getting the children in place was a delight in itself. As Don exclaimed, "It's like trying to herd grasshoppers."

Upper grades played bells and sang in harmony on every song. Three combined grade pieces included hand gestures, solo percussion and dance by 5th/6th grade girls in the last number, Shoes N Kazoo Blues. Yes, those really were kazoos they played.
